Week 1

Day 1 

Math Before Bed is a collection of prompts that can inspire mathematical discussions that you and your children can have before bed, at dinner, or anytime. 

Each prompt on this site shows you and your child a perplexing problem. Sometimes there is one right answer and sometimes there are many right answers. The purpose of each question is to generate a discussion about HOW you determined an answer. If you find one answer, try to find another. You could complete one prompt a night, or many prompt

Pumpkin Explosion Task 

Using this link on the MathBeforeBed website, with your child follow the instructions to explore the task. After you make your estimates, watch the video to verify your estimates. 

Card Game - Try for a Total of 10  

Materials - one deck of cards or make your own cards to play with 

Play this math card game alone or as a team. Lay out 20 cards on the table (leave out face cards or change them to equal 0, while aces equal 1). Kids remove sets of cards that add up to 10, ultimately trying to remove all the cards from the table. You can group more than one card together It’s harder than you think! Total of 10 



Day 2 

Use this link to the Would You Rather website. After carefully examining the task, use mathematical reasoning to justify your answer.

Have your child read the recipe to you. Gather the ingredients and discuss which measuring devices you will need. Your child should measure the ingredients and mix them together, then space the cookies on the baking sheet. Have your child set the timer and tell you what time they should be ready. Some measuring devices use more than one measurement system (e.g., cups and millilitres). Why are there different scales? Which one should we use? Could we use the other one? Can we measure wet and dry ingredients using the same types of measurement? Why do we space the cookies the way we do? What would happen if we put them closer together? Discuss amounts of ingredients needed if you were to halve or double the recipe.



Day 3

Mystery Bank

Using this link on the MathBeforeBed website, with your child follow the instructions to explore the task. There are two mystery coins in the piggy bank. What could the coins be to make the total amount of money greater than $1.00.

Watch this video to explore multiplying 2 digit numbers.

Now practice and teach your parents how to find the product of 2 digit numbers using the Area Model. You can roll 2 dice to find new numbers to multiply together. (i.e. roll a 3 and 4 and then roll a 1 and 7 - you can make 34 x 17)
